Joan jett real wild child dvd3/21/2023 ![]() “Design Your Universe” opens with some acoustic guitars, before it explodes in another thunderous beat. Then Floor Jansen has got to return for another duet in “Sancta Terra”. “Cry For The Moon” is another nice visual play and a leading part for drummer Ariën van Weesenbeek with a nice short drum solo. One of the highlights is of course the lengthy “The Phantom Agony”, including a flash laser show and more firework. It’s very cool, that they haven’t forgotten about their former band. Ad Sluijter, Jeroen Simons and Yves Huts are special guests on stage and they add some special power to “Quietus”. In the meantime, three former band members have plugged in. After “Retrospect”, there is time for another lengthy instrumental intermezzo, called “Battle Of The Heroes & Imperial March”. After that it’s time for “The Obsession Devotion”, which starts off with many fire bombs. But let’s first continue with this amazing live show with a little competition between the two sides of the hall. Besides that, there’s also some room for bonus footage. Be sure, that if you insert the second DVD in your player, that you’re in for another ninety minutes of EPICA tenth anniversary live show. While in “Delirium”, a beautiful and more quiet song, Mark asks for more attention and the first DVD closes with “Black Infinity”. They turn this into a magnificent tour de force with some fabulous guitar work by Mark. A song like that asks for a lot of energy and the orchestra takes control for a short while in an “Orchestral Medley”, in which the band can have some time out to prepare for the anniversary edition of “The Divine Conspiracy”, which is next. ![]() They turn it into something special with yellow colored lights and a sparkling fire coming down from above. “Serenade Of Self Destruction” is being dedicated to a deceased friend of the band. “Twin Flames” has been performed here for the first time and it sure is a beautiful experience to hear it in a live setting. ![]() It’s top of the world standing next to each other here, which is another cherry on the cake of tonight’s show. In “Stabat Matar Dolorosa”, Simone invites Floor Jansen (REVAMP, NIGHTWISH) over for a classical vocal duet. The song is definitely a crowd pleaser and the fire crackers have been saved to end it with a big bang. “Never Enough” is on next and obviously, Simone has taken this time to put on another dress. ![]() Mark and the violin player of the orchestra show their skills in this well-known classical piece of Vivaldi. It’s an instrumental part, that gives the band a short break to prepare themselves for another salvo of powerful tracks. Like I mentioned before, there’s never a dull moment here. Two long clothes come down with women doing an acrobatic balancing act in them. It’s a slow song and not one you might expect to have a spectacular view. Simone introduces the next song, called “Chasing The Dragon”. Sure, this might not be as powerful as the previous song, but it’s all very overwhelming and the band really is destined to make this a very special night and a very special show, that’s for sure. There is not a moment of rest, also not musically, because after a three second countdown “Martyrs Of The Free Word” is already starting off. And if that isn’t enough, there are bombs flashing in all different directions and I didn’t even mention the beautiful light show, that is constantly moving, too. The choir is moving, the orchestra plays their part, the band is running from left to right and back, and Simone conducts the whole event together with Mark, who is overseeing the whole operation. This show is really a visual masterpiece, because there is constantly something happening. A longer welcome follows and after that, it looks like the whole hall is set on fire during “Unleashed”. It’s astonishing to see that the whole crowd suddenly turns into one handclapping mass. Just have a look at the fabulous reaction of the crowd halfway this song, when Simone gives the sign to clap along to the rhythm of the music. Over the years EPICA has gained a lot in quality and when I compare this show to the first show we attended in Zeist, it’s obvious that this band now belongs to the premier league. “Sensorium” continues after Simone has welcomed the audience to the show, a show that can only be done by the best in this scene. Musical firework but also flash bombs, it’s a party for your ears and your eyes. When “Introspect” kicks off with firework, bombs, flashlights, stroboscopes, heavy drum beats, fast riffs and choir vocals, the evening continues in a “Monopoly On Truth”, that ends with a lot of firework. The orchestral opener is a countdown to a spectacular event, shown to you in about ninety lengthy minutes on this first DVD. The CD review is on these pages too and here we browse through the content of two DVD’s filled with a magical live show. Happy birthday to EPICA! Ten years of symphonic gothic metal is being celebrated here on this double DVD, triple CD set.
